HERBAL DYED

Herbal dyes, extracted from plants, can produce pure shades and subtle variations of natural colors that synthetic dyes cannot match and which mellow with age. This ancient method of coloring is environmentally friendly as the majority of natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources – roots, berries, bark, leaves, and wood — and other organic sources such as fungi and lichens.

The development of man-made synthetic dyes in the mid-19th century triggered the end of the large-scale market for natural dyes. Synthetic dyes, which could be produced in large quantities, quickly superseded natural dyes in the commercial textile industry. However, the damage done to the environment and to human well being by synthetic dyes is indisputable.
